Garden Design for New Build Homes & Small Spaces

It’s well documented how important gardens are for our health and wellbeing and yet anyone who has recently bought a new build house will know that gardens are shrinking.  If you buy a house in the centre of London your expectations of having a garden at all are low, but in the suburbs and smaller towns houses always used to have reasonable sized gardens.  These days developers are cramming as many houses as possible onto ever smaller plots which often used to be part of someone’s garden.

We need to embrace and make the most of our shrinking gardens.  I am often approached to design outdoor living spaces.  You may be surprised that as a keen gardener I love doing these projects.  Just because someone wants an outdoor kitchen, courtyard seating area and lots of structure does not make their garden any less interesting.  It's a challenge to incorporate modern requirements into an outdoor space and yet still keep it looking green and soft.

I love the contemporary courtyard look, it should not be stark and lacking in greenery.  Walls can be softened with low maintenance planting.  Clipped shapes, architectural palms and evergreen climbers are simple to look after and will clothe your outdoor room with greenery year round.  You can still introduce some seasonal colour with bulbs and some easy care perennials like Geranium ‘Rozanne’, Sedum ‘Purple Emperor’, Helenium ‘Wyndley’, Stachys byzantina, Salvia ‘Caradonna’, and Heuchera ‘Obsidian’.  Combine these with some soft grasses like Miscanthus ‘Kleine Silberspinne’, Stipa ‘Tenuissima’, and Pennisetum ‘Hamelyn’ for a soft, modern scheme.

The result is a beautiful outdoor room that will extend your living space into a garden that is easy to maintain and a pleasant space to spend time with friends and family.
